Horrible smelling, stinky garbage is an unpleasant thing to see or smell. Sometimes, when trash or garbage is left in its container too long, it can leave a lingering odor and sometimes even a lingering stain. Add to this the bacteria that could be growing there and the germs that can be transferred, and there comes the possibility of a real problem. Using a few things available around the house and a little handy preparation, you can eliminate odor and stains when you clean out a garbage pail.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Remove any garbage that is in the pail and dispose of it in a proper container like a plastic garbage bag.
Step2
Fill the pail up with hot, soapy water and add about a capful of disinfectant to kill any germs or bacteria. Let this solution sit in the pail for at least four hours or overnight if possible.
Step3
Pour out all but about ¼ of the solution from the pail after having let it sit for a period of time.
Step4
Put on a pair of plastic gloves and scrub the pail's bottoms and sides with a cleaning rag or a scrub pad if there are stains visible.
Step5
Empty out the remainder of the cleaning solution from the pail and refill the pail back up with hot water (no soap) to rinse away any soapy residue.
Step6
Wipe the pail dry with paper towels and an old cloth.
Step7
Spray the pail with a disinfectant. Let the pail dry completely before lining it with a trash bag or before adding trash to the pail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Line the garbage pail with old newspaper or paper towels to prevent future odor.
