Things You'll Need:
- Flamenco guitar (optional)
- Dance shoes (optional)
-
Step 1
Take Flamenco dance lessons. Sign up at a local music school, dance academy or university. If unsure where to begin, ask for recommendations at a music store or performance venue.
-
Step 2
Obtain a Flamenco guitar, which has a similar build to the modern classic guitar but weighs less and uses cypress wood to produce lighter and more percussive Flamenco music. Get familiar with the tapping plate which protects the guitar face during rhythmic finger tapping.
-
Step 3
Sign up for beginning Flamenco guitar lessons to learn the essential techniques and exercises. Gradually work up to different and more complex rhythms and patterns. The instructor may provide sheet music and guitar tabs.
-
Step 4
Hire a private singing tutor who has Flamenco experience. Teachers who can dance and sing Flamenco provide a stronger understanding of how to sing for dance accompaniment. Flamenco music troupes often provide singing and dancing lessons.
-
Step 5
Teach yourself by reading "how to" books or following instructional videos if you cannot afford personal instruction. Although you will learn best from a professional, books and videos can supplement lessons or provide a good foundation for self-starters.
-
Step 6
Travel to Andalucia Spain to witness Flamenco performances in a traditional and historical environment. While you are there consider taking a class in Seville, the Andalucian town with many schools that teach the different aspects of Flamenco.
