If you want longer, fuller hair and have the money to pay for it, extensions may be the answer. There are several ways to have extensions applied to your hair. The following steps will show you the two most popular: individual strand extensions, which is applying 30 to 50 pieces of hair at a time, and weft extensions, which is sewing a line of hair into braids of your own hair.

Things You'll Need:

  • Hairdresser
  • Real or synthetic extensions

    Applying Individual Strand Extensions

  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of extensions you want. Choose natural hair or synthetic.

  2. Step 2

Ask your stylist to match the extensions to your hair color or pick the color you would like. Decide upon the length you would like your extensions.

  3. Step 3

Choose how you would like your individual strand extensions attached. A good method is by use of a high-tech applicator that softens the polymer bond at the top of the strand. Your hairdresser will use this tool and mold the extensions to your hair.

  4. Step 4

Have the extensions weaved in or clamped with metal rods as an alternative to the high-heat polymer method.

  5. Applying Weft Hair Extensions

  6. Step 1

Ask your hair dresser to make tiny braids of your hair in rows called tracks around your head. These tracks run horizontally around the back of your head underneath the hairline so that they are not noticeable.

  7. Step 2

Determine how many wefts of hair you would like attached. This depends upon how long and how thick you want the hair.

  8. Step 3

Ask your hairdresser to sew the weft into the tracks of hair.

  9. Step 4

Blend in the weft with your own hair by combing your hair over the extensions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Several different hair extensions, such as "Hairdo" by Jessica Simpson, simply clip on your existing hair. You can attach these extensions yourself in a matter of minutes and they come in human hair or synthetic.
  • Do not remove extensions yourself. To avoid damaging your hair, see a professional hair stylist to remove these extensions.
