A trip to Charlottesville, Virginia is like a trip into the past. The Charlottesville area was home to two of America's presidents, James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson. In addition to presidential homes, this city boasts one of America's oldest public universities and many historical buildings.

Step1
Stop at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, located in the historical McIntire Building in downtown Charlottesville. The society maintains a large library and a museum. They also offer educational programs, walking tours and lectures throughout the year. Contact the society by calling (434) 296-1492.
Step2
Visit the University of Virginia. Take a free guided tour of the Rotunda and Lawn. Tours are offered fives times a day throughout the year, except during the winter holiday in December and January. Also, visit the University of Virginia Art Museum. For hours contact (434) 924-3592.
Step3
Tour Monticello, once home to President Thomas Jefferson. Monticello is open every day of the year except for Christmas. Hours of operation vary throughout the year. There are also events throughout the year. For information contact (434) 984-9822.

Enjoy Michie Tavern, where you are greeted and entertained by costumed hosts and hostesses. Tour the Tavern Museum and dine on a period-based midday meal in the tavern. For hours of operation call (434) 977-1234.

Walk through Ash-lawn Highland, the home of President James Monroe. This home boasts a working farm atmosphere with chickens, sheep, cows and peacocks. There are also various events and activities scheduled throughout the year. For hours of operation contact (434) 293-9539.

Take a walking tour of Charlottesville's Historic District including Court-Square. Walking tours are offered by the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. Tours depart from the McIntire Building at 10 a.m. every Saturday from April through October.

Ride on the Hatton Ferry, which is one of only two poled ferries that still run in the United States. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The ferry runs from mid-April to mid-October. For more information, contact the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society.

  • Buy a Presidents' Pass at the Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau. This pass is a discounted combination ticket which allows you to visit Monticello, Michie Tavern Museum and Ash Lawn Highland.
