How to Be Aware of Voters Rights

Help protect voter's rights by becoming aware of election laws that deal with rights people have as voters. Too many voters have complained that poll workers and other people violate their rights. Knowing what these rights are can prevent you from becoming a convenient target after Election Day.

1. Stay informed of current voter rights and legislation. Visit USA.org and view a multitude of voter resources, including current legislation. USA.org is the official U.S. web portal and administered by the U.S. General Services Administration's Office of Citizen Services and Communications.
2. Volunteer to work at a polling station during Election Day. Learn the latest rules on assisting voters as part of your learning process. Learn how to operate the voting machinery and software. Get well versed in processing voters from the waiting line to ballot submission.
3. Review the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Familiarize yourself with the history of voting rights before and after this act. Do everything legally possible to help people carry out their right to vote, regardless of race, color or minority status.
4. Follow state rules regarding voters not registered to vote at your voting precinct. Call the Department of State number provided to you if you don't understand any item dealing with voter's rights. In many cases, you'd take the voter's information and have them enter a "dummy" ballot.
