The right to vote ensures that we are all able to vote for the political candidates that we trust to protect our freedoms. Before casting your ballot at the polls, make an informed decision to ensure the vote counts during the election.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Most states only allow voting at the polling site assigned. Check the voter registration card for location of the polling site.

  2. Step 2

Carry proper ID. Different states have different requirements on forms of ID accepted. A current photo ID and proof of address can be requirements to cast a ballot.

  3. Step 3

Get in line at the polling place before the polls are scheduled to close. As long as you are already in line you can't be turned away once the polls are closed.

  4. Step 4

Focus on your ballot. Human error is a major factor in getting votes thrown out. Review the sample ballot received carefully and follow the instructions given. Before turning in the ballot check to make sure to mark the correct candidates.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are unsure about which polling place to go to on Election Day contact your local Board of Elections by phone. Some states also allow you to look up this information online and can tell you the hours that the polling place is open.
  • If you need help completing your ballot or understanding instructions ask a poll worker.
  • If a poll worker tells you are ineligible to vote because of the wrong ID or any other reason ask for a provisional ballot instead.
  • You can not be turned away from the polls without being allowed to vote. A provisional ballot is given when eligibility to vote can not be determined. Once reviewed it may end up being rejected.
  • When poll workers are trying to encourage a vote for a specific candidate or you notice any other signs of impropriety contact the non partisan hotline. For accuracy, program the numbers into your cell phone beforehand.
