Tap is a dance from the 1930s and 40s that combines the mechanics of the shoe with the choreography of the dance to form a complicated rhythm of sounds. If you are an independent tapper, joining a tap dance group could be a great way for you to learn from other tappers and have the opportunity to perform. Use these steps to learn how to find and join a tap dance group in your area.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Join the International Tap Dancers Network. This is a network formed by dance professionals and studio owners. Basic membership is free and upgraded memberships are offered based on your position in tap dance. They offer discounts on tap gear, as well as announcements of events in your area and other benefits.

  2. Step 2

Call your local dance studio, school or supply shop. They often have a bulletin board or flyers about upcoming events and groups or clubs that meet locally.

  3. Step 3

Visit your local community center. Many cities have special programs to keep kids off the streets; dance is very often used for that. Check with one of your local community centers or after-school program to see if they have a tap dance group.

  4. Step 4

Start your own group. Get some tappers and tap students together to form a group. Establish a small board to help make decisions and promote yourselves to perform at different events and venues.

  5. Step 5

Search for online tap communities. There are lots of social networking sites now with millions of members. Most of the sites offer different groups with a highly likely chance that someone has already set up a tap group online. Visit some of these sites, such as CafeMom, Yahoo! Groups and others to find a tap group you can chat with.

  6. Step 6

To join any of these groups, just follow the simple process they have. Some charge an annual fee and may have you fill out an application, while others just ask you to show up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Whether you are a beginner tapper or a tap instructor, you should never stop learning from those around you.
  • If you group has a fee, make sure they are legit before paying them anything.
