A pet tiger requires many commitments, not the least of which is the clean-up process. Like most animals, tigers require care and cleaning that is specific to their needs, personality and breed. Follow the basic instructions to keep both you and your tiger healthy.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be sensitive to your tiger's personality. Beginning and veteran owners know that their pet/rescued animal can be either benign or dangerous. Keep your safeguards uppermost in your mind. Isolating the animal can make your cleaning process safer and quicker, although some owners choose to simply distract the animal instead.

  2. Step 2

Begin with the obvious. Clean the droppings from the floor of the cage or enclosure using a shovel and wheelbarrow. Your tiger may gravitate to certain areas in the cage. Double check these areas and clean thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Rinse wet areas if possible. Use a solution specifically designed for this purpose, such as one with biological enzymes that eliminate odors. Dirt areas can be covered with additional sand, gravel or pea stone.

  4. Step 4

Clean feeding areas. Remove spilled or refused foods from the area to prevent pest infestations. Rinse areas where meats or bloods are present.

  5. Step 5

Remove hair deposits and other debris from den, perch and claw log scratching post.

  6. Step 6

Initiate deep cleanings at least once per month. Rinse all areas thoroughly and allow to air dry. Empty water and feed containers and replace or wash with a warm solution. Rinse perching post and replace claw log. Cart away ground covering that is most often used, and replace it with fresh materials.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider composting your tiger's droppings.
  • Check your state's laws regarding pet waste disposal.
