How to Survive a Grass Fire

When most people think of fires, they think of forests burning. But grass fires, also known as bushfires, are common hazards that can be harmful to not only the surrounding land but can be deadly if you don't know how to escape one.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Know the basics about grass fires and protection so you can survive. Heat from the fire is hottest at the head of the fire and they usually burn in straight lines. The fires are shallow, but they have great amounts of radiated heat which can kill you. These fires can be fast moving but they generally burn for only a few minutes in each area before the fuel is gone.
Step2
Find a barrier between you and the fire. Cover exposed skin with natural fiber materials, seek refuge in vehicles, houses, logs, rocks, holes or even wheel ruts are all good choices. You can also dig a shallow hole and cover yourself with dirt if the soil is soft enough.
Step3
Move the vehicle to an area where there are no leaves and small branches, which are fuel for the fire. Try to park behind large logs or other barriers to protect the vehicle from the fire. Stay outside the vehicle keeping it between you and the fire as long as possible and only get inside to survive if the fire becomes too close or dangerous.
Step4
Keep the car running to avoid vapor lock, close all windows and vents and turn the air intake switch to recycle. Stay on the car floor and cover your body with blankets, clothing or floor mats. Avoid touching the metal of the car because the radiant heat from the fire is intense, but remember it will pass quickly and you'll survive.
Step5
Seek areas that are already burned or as bare as possible. Anything with dirt will aid in helping you survive. Move downhill; the fire will burn uphill more quickly.
