The soap box derby race has been a popular children's sport since the 1930s, and it still attracts a loyal following today. By becoming involved with the All-American Soap Box Derby organization and keeping track of local contests, you will easily be able to join a children's soap box derby race.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tool kit containing hex nut wrenches
  • WD-40
  • Soap box derby car model kit and accessories
  • Helmet
  • Brake or lighter fluid
  • Eye protection
  1. Step 1

Determine which class you would like to compete in, according to your skill level, age and weight. The Stock class is designed for beginners and younger children, with the model kits all meeting the same standards. The Super Stock and Master's classes allow more variation in soap box car design, and they accommodate larger and older children.

  2. Step 2

Check out the official website for the All-American Soap Box Derby in order to buy car kits and accessories and to register for the various racing events (see Resources below). You can also learn about making your car more aerodynamic and competitive in a children's soap box derby race.

  3. Step 3

Contact the All-American Soap Box Derby to find out about local and regional races where you can compete and gain experience.

  4. Step 4

Purchase all the materials you will need to build and maintain your soap box derby car. These will include the model kit itself, wheels and tools, as well as extra hardware such as hex bolts, washers and wheel pins. In addition, you will need to buy safety gear, such as a helmet and eye protection, and materials to help maintain your vehicle, such as brake fluid for lubrication.

  5. Step 5

Take the time to become familiar with the way the soap box racer operates, especially in terms of braking and steering. Do a few practice runs in your racer if possible, so you will know what to expect at the time of the race.

  6. Step 6

Enter the race, following all rules and regulations according to the All-American Soap Box Derby. These rules can be found on the website.

Tips & Warnings
  • Proper eye protection, such as goggles, is extremely important for the soap box racer. Not only will goggles protect the eyes from dirt and dust, but they will prevent distraction from the wind.
