Things You'll Need:
- Rallycross car
-
Step 1
Choose the proper car for a rallycross race. Most rallycross associations define a rallycross car as being a production model of which at least 2500 were manufactured during that specific model year. From there, modifications may be added, such as turbochargers, superchargers, aerodynamic modifications, four-wheel drive, an active differential and a gearbox.
-
Step 2
Familiarize yourself with the type of track or circuit used for a rallycross race. While many rallycross races are conducted in an open area with a dirt or otherwise natural surface, some tracks may have a combination of different surfaces, including asphalt.
-
Step 3
Review the rules of the rallycross race. Usually, heats are conducted with several cars lined up in a row at the start. Each race may include just a few laps around the circuit, with the fastest cars qualifying for final heats.
-
Step 4
Join a local rallycross or sports-car club, which may help you to enter a rallycross race without having to pay excessive entry fees. Many races may require you to have participated in prior rallycross events before entering. However, membership in a rallysport club may help you circumvent that requirement.
-
Step 5
Learn how to drive a rallysport car, which involves keeping the car under control during rapid acceleration on the dirt track. Learn how to avoid spinning out on the track as well. Knowledge of powersliding, during which you control the amount of traction your car loses around corners, and drifting, in which the car slides laterally around a curve, will also be necessary.
-
Step 6
Log on to the website for the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) to find out more about rallycross racing, how to join the SCCA and where local rallycross events are being held (see Resources below).
