Kart racing, which involves small, one-person race vehicles, is a fun way to enter the world of motor sports for children and adults alike. In fact, many auto racing experts feel that this is one of the best ways to train yourself for more sophisticated racing, such as stock car or rally racing. By following a few basic rules and tips, you can have a lot of fun in a kart race.

    Learn How to Kart Race

  1. Step 1

Decide on a type of kart race in which to participate. Sprint racing involves a circuit, with various turns and curves, that ranges from 1/4 of a mile to a mile. Endurance racing, also known as "Enduro," involves a race that lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an entire day.

  2. Step 2

Choose which class of kart you would like to drive. While so-called "superkarts" can be as fast as, if not faster than, regular automobiles, there are plenty of karts that are much more suitable for beginners because of their smaller engines and user-friendly handling and controls.

  3. Step 3

Dress appropriately for kart racing. This means a helmet and eye protection, as well as long pants and covered shoes. Never underestimate the kart's small engine and its ability to create heat or burn exposed skin.

  4. Step 4

Start off by driving through the circuit at a relatively reduced rate of speed. This way, you can become familiar with both the way the kart handles and the course itself, eliminating any surprises later.

  5. Step 5

Increase your rate of speed through subsequent runs on the track. You will learn the limitations of the kart as you travel through the curves and turns, eventually becoming able to increase your speed through them. Remember, most racers believe that the race is won through the curves, not the straightaways.

  6. Step 6

Attend a driving school that specializes in kart racing, such as the Bondurant Super Kart School (see Resources below). These schools will teach you important tips and skills for kart racing, giving you an advantage if this is your first step toward other types of car racing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some classes of karts, such as superkarts, can be extremely fast. Some superkarts can reach up to 160 mph, achieving 0 to 60 mph times of just over 3 seconds, which is as fast as a Porsche or Ferrari.
