Some brands of computers are well known and sought after for their performance. However, good performance, as well as customer satisfaction, is not guaranteed. Even the best brands can have problems. It is important to know what you can do to enforce your consumer rights when your computer does not meet your expectations.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Deal with the retailer first. A retailer is responsible for all items sold. If you have any issues concerning your store-bought computer, you should first address them to the store from which you bought it.
Step2
Make notes of any promises made to you about the computer's performance. Consumers have a right to expect that the item is fit for their purpose and will act as has been stated. The salesperson is obligated to refund your money or exchange your computer if he has made false promises to you about the computer.
Step3
Contact the computer manufacturer. Calmly state what the problem is and how you would like it to be resolved. Keep a record of your call and take notes of the names of everyone you speak to at the company, as well as their employee numbers.
Step4
Allow the manufacturer to make an attempt to repair your computer. This is usually the first solution offered if the computer is faulty. The company representative should give detailed information on when and how the computer will be repaired. Some companies have licensed technicians who will visit to make the repairs.
Step5
Check the terms of your warranty. The manufacturer should be able to repair your computer to your satisfaction. If not, the company is obligated to exchange your computer for a new one or offer you a full refund.
Step6
Check the laws of your state regarding computer purchases. The laws vary from state to state but some give the consumer even more than the right to repairs, exchanges or refunds. Some give consumers the right to an upgrade or three times the value of the computer they purchased.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can claim a refund, repair or exchange within a reasonable amount of time, but the amount of time varies from store to store and amongst manufacturers. Check the company's policy to be sure you are making your claim within the appropriate time.
  • Record any reference number your manufacturer gives you so they can locate your information the next time you call the company.
  • It can be somewhat difficult to enforce your rights in the computer industry. It may be necessary, in the end, to obtain legal representation.
