How to Write a Resume for an MBA Program

The top MBA programs in this country are extremely selective in who they recruit and accept. You will face cutthroat competition to get accepted into a top MBA program. Write a dazzling resume that focuses on your relevant work experience, including any internships you may have had.

Instructions

  1. Write a Resume for MBA Program Admissions

    • 1

Research the MBA program before you send in your resume. Get to know the faculty and research specialties of the program. This way, you can personalize both your cover letter and resume, which may increase your chances of being accepted to the program.

    • 2

Indicate the specialization you wish to pursue in your objective statement. An MBA program can consist of several different specializations including management, e-commerce, marketing, finance and accounting.

    • 3

Treat your MBA admissions resume much the same as you would a resume for an open job position. Imagine that the recruiters and admissions officers are managers looking to hire a new employee. Sell yourself to them much as you would to any job recruiter.

    • 4

Spend a great deal of time on your undergraduate education experience. In addition to indicating the degree program you pursued and your GPA, you may also want to make mention of specific courses you took that may be relevant in your MBA work. This will demonstrate your commitment to the field.

    • 5

Provide detailed information on all relevant work experience. This should be the "meat" of your resume. Your relevant work experience will be what admissions officers will look at most closely and what they'll spend the most time discussing during your interview.

    • 6

Include all other jobs you've held, whether they seem pertinent to the MBA or not. While relevant experience should be at the forefront of your resume, be thorough in listing all of your work experiences, as it will help you appear more well rounded and reliable.

    • 7

Highlight your leadership capabilities. Include information about your time as head of the student body or your position as manager of a small department at work.

    • 8

Devote a separate section to special honors and awards you've received, but only if you've been bestowed with more than three. Otherwise, include this information with your relevant work or education experience.

Tips & Warnings

  • Standard resume format lists work experience in reverse chronological order, with the most recent work listed first, then going backward in time. To stand out from other applicants, write a functional resume where you list the most relevant work experience first.
