How to clean up your house, and your life.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time
  • Music
  • A new attitude

Step1
SET ASIDE SOME TIME. If you have to, take a day off work or school. Having clutter and a messy atmosphere makes it difficult to have a well-balanced and optimistic life. It will be beneficial in the end because you'll be able to be free from your messes and onto bigger and better things.
Step2
MUSIC AND ATTITUDE. Put in some music that you enjoy that makes you feel good, happy, and like moving forward in life. This will help get you into the right frame of mind to get to work and to stay motivated and not too overwhelmed.
Step3
ONE STEP AT A TIME. Set a goal like "I will have my bedroom and bathroom clutter free by noon." And concentrate only on achieving that goal. If the whole house is cluttered, take it one room at a time.
Step4
SEPARATE YOUR STUFF. First lets say you're going to gather up all the clothes strewn about your house. You can separate them into up to 4 or 5 categories. Some pile categories could be "keep", "donate", "seasonal", "trash", and even a "I'm not really sure" pile. Don't be afraid to put things in the donate pile, there are people out there who need clothes more than you do, see everything you put in that pile as a good deed.
Step5
CASH IN. Have a big garage or lawn sale for one or two days with all the stuff you've decided to let go of. Have a friend or two help you set everything out and refrain from taking anything back in the house. Donate anything that's left after the sale, or give it away for free. With the money you make, you can buy new stuff for your house, (paint, furniture, bedding, carpet, whatever you want!)

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble staying motivated or organized, ask a friend who is better at it to help you. Or make a list of all the reasons you want your house to be clutter free and read the list when you start to lose motivation.
  • Set REALISTIC goals.
  • If you get overwhelmed, remind yourself to take it one step at a time.
