The biggest threat to your teenager's life is not alcohol, drugs or even peer pressure--it's being behind the wheel of a car. Every year, almost 6,000 teenagers lose their lives because of car accidents. The younger your teen is, the more education he needs before getting out on the road. It's important to choose a Driver's Education Program for your teen that helps them make responsible decisions on the road and keeps them safe.

From Quick Guide: Teen Program Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Inquire about free state sponsored driver's education courses at your teenager's high school. Complete the program, which usually lasts for 1 to 2 weeks. Receive a certificate that makes your teenager eligible for a learner's permit.

  2. Step 2

Seek out a driver's education program in the phone book. Look for an accredited program that focuses on teaching your teenager the rules of the road. To obtain a learner's permit your teen must pass a written test.

  3. Step 3

Consider online drivers education courses. There's usually no one-on- one involvement or on the road assistance offered. The benefit to these courses is they're less expensive than private courses or other driver education schools.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speak to the instructors and find out how much time your teenager will actually spend driving on the road. Find out if the program encourages feedback and involvement from parents.
  • All states feature Graduated Driver's Licenses or learner's permits that allow a teenager to drive with restrictions. Check the rules of your state to ensure your teen meets all the requirements to drive.
  • Continue to monitor your teenager and offer feedback. When your teenager passes a driver's education course, continue to supervise them as they learn.
  • Teenage Drivers are less likely to wear their seat belts; remind your teenager to buckle up every time they get behind the wheel of a car.
