How to Defend Hunting

Animal rights activists and anti-gun supporters argue its violence and cruelty to animals; hunters defend hunting by stating the positive aspects of the sport. How do make a logical argument?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Express your views in a sincere and polite manner. Being confrontational can turn people off to your argument. Illustrate your points, and be sincere in order to be convincing.

  2. Step 2

Explain the necessity of hunting for providing food. With the exception of vegetarians, people eat meat, and this can only be obtained by hunting. Defend hunting by stating that hunting is a means of survival and is not practiced for the simple act of killing. Speak out against hunters who hunt only for the thrill of the kill.

  3. Step 3

Argue that hunting is a means by which to control the animal population. With an increasing number of rural areas being developed for human habitation, many forms of wildlife, in some cases predatory species, are being driven away. Show that hunting creates a necessary natural balance.

  4. Step 4

Present the argument, particularly to animal rights activists, that animals do not possess rights as we see them. It is impossible to convey human laws onto animals. To illustrate, explain that when a cheetah hunts a gazelle, it is not violating the gazelle's rights. Show that anthropomorphism has no logical place in an argument against hunting.

  5. Step 5

Inform anti-hunting advocates that hunters contribute millions and millions of dollars to wildlife funds by way of taxes. For example, the Pittman-Robertson Funds, used in part for wildlife restoration, is funded by taxes applied to the purchase of hunting equipment such as bows, arrows and guns.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't attempt to change anyone's thinking regarding hunting. Those who oppose it usually do so vehemently.
