How to Change to a Different Color Within a Double Crochet Stitch
Single colors are fine when you're first learning the double crochet stitch. Changing colors at the end of a row or round is relatively straightforward. But sometimes you want to change colors in the middle. It's important to follow the correct technique for a smooth transition. You don't want to spend the time, energy and resources on something only to have a color change stick out like a sore thumb.

1
Make a yarn-over on your crochet hook with your main color. You're setting up your double crochet stitch for the color change.
-
2
Slip your hook into the next stitch. Pick up all threads of the yarn so you don't end up tugging at the stitch because a strand is caught in the row.
-
-
3
Yarn over your hook a second time and slip the hook back out the stitch in the row. You should have the yarn on the hook and another loop on the crochet needle.
-
4
Create another yarn over, giving you two loops on the needle and yarn on the hook. Pull the hook through the two loops, leaving you with the yarn on the hook in your main color.
-
5
Let go of the main color and pick up your secondary color. Make a yarn over with it. This gives you one loop with the main color and one with the new color.
-
6
Pull the yarn on your hook through each loop on the needle. You've now made one double crochet stitch and can continue working with the new color.
-
7
Practice your new skill by making a hat. Head Huggers is a charity that distributes chemo caps. Make hats with baseball, basketball, soccer and football designs that require changing colors while double crocheting.
