How to Apply Tree Fertilizers

Trees need to be fertilized just like shrubs and flowers. Determine the type of fertilizer needed for a tree by examining the soil or grass closely around the trunk of the tree. Once a tree has absorbed the appropriate nutrients or fertilizer it will become stronger, healthier and really start to flourish with new growth and foliage. There are several different options on how to apply fertilizer to a tree.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tree fertilizer
  • Fertilizer application sprayer

Step1
Apply tree fertilizer directly on to the surface of the soil. This can be accomplished by scattering a dry fertilizer in about a 12-inch circle around the base of the tree trunk for a small or newly planted tree. If the tree is very large or has been planted there for many years, then expand the area to cover with fertilizer in a circular pattern directly underneath the outer edges of the tree foliage. Water the area thoroughly to help the fertilizer dissolve and soak into the root area of the tree to be absorbed. Over-watering will only dilute the fertilizer.
Step2
Fill holes in the soil around the tree with an application of either dry or liquid fertilizer. Some tree owners prefer to use tree spikes that contain fertilizer specific for their tree type. Dig a small hole or several holes to insert tree spikes in each hole, as per the directions of the tree spike manufacturer. Water thoroughly and then on an as-needed basis. Many fruit trees are fertilized in this manner so as to not spray fertilizing chemicals directly on the fruit. Liquid fertilizers can also be poured into the holes around the trees to be absorbed by the roots in a more intense effort than spraying.
Step3
Spray the leaves or foliage of the tree directly with the fertilizer. With the assistance of a fertilizer sprayer, the liquid fertilizer can be directly applied by spraying on the leaves of the tree. The sprayers are usually attached to a water hose so the water mixes with the fertilizer as it is sprayed. Using the sprayer, apply evenly all over the foliage or leaves of the tree. The leaves will absorb the water mixed with the fertilizer nutrients to give the tree the nourishment it needs.
Step4
Inject the fertilizer, whether dry or liquid form of fertilizer, into the trunk of the tree. Fertilizer injections can be a solution for fertilizing a tree that is extra large and if it is doubtful that the normal applications of tree fertilizing may not be adequate. A tree syringe with fertilizer may be injected into the tree or even a type of fertilizer stake hammered into the tree. There are different types available through tree nurseries, commercial arborists or forestry suppliers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with a nursery that specializes in trees with help in determining what type of fertilizer or nutrients your tree needs and the appropriate percentages for application.
  • Do not over fertilize a tree as this will only damage or kill the tree.
