As food prices rise, many people look for ways to save money on food for their pets, such as buying cheaper food and finding alternatives to the standard pet foods. Sometimes the alternatives are actually better for the pet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find ways to get your pet food at reduced prices. Use coupons from weekly circulars, or sign up on the food company's website to get coupons sent to you.

  2. Step 2

Shop in bulk. Get a membership at Sam's Club, Costco or any other bulk store where you can save big when you buy your pet food in quantity. Shop at Wal-Mart and other discount stores to see if they offer better prices than what you are paying.

  3. Step 3

Find alternative pet foods that are at the same quality level as the ones you buy and either cost less or offer more coupons.

  4. Step 4

Make food for your pet. Look for recipes online to find inexpensive ones that are often healthier than commercial food. Buy the ingredients in bulk and make large batches of the food, freezing some if necessary.

  5. Step 5

Look into alternative diets that require no recipes or commercial feed. Use natural, whole foods such as raw meat for dogs. Buy these items in bulk or at a local butcher shop that has reasonable rates.
