How to Audit a Class

Many people decide to audit a class when they are interested in a topic but not the college credit that goes with the course. Students may choose to attend only one segment of a class or to take a class when their schedule is full.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign up as a student with the college in question if you aren't a student already. Choose a class to audit from among any that will allow auditing. Make certain it will fit into your course schedule.

  2. Step 2

Go to the department head to get permission to audit the class. Seek the permission of the professor if you are required to have it.

  3. Step 3

Pay the course fee to audit the class, which is often the same amount required for taking the class for credit.

  4. Step 4

Sit in on the class and take notes, or just sit and listen to the lectures. Buy the book for the course if it is required, or skip the book if you don't think it will add to the experience of the class.

  5. Step 5

Get the information from the class, but don't sweat memorization, since you won't have a grade added into your GPA. Think about taking the course again for credit if it's a class you feel you would do well in or one that you would like to see added to your transcript of completed college courses.
