The 4-H programs around the country are known for their dedication to teaching youth a variety of subject areas. Competitive events create an opportunity for the youth to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities. Every event is planned and staffed by committees of volunteers. If you desire to contribute time and talent to your local 4-H leadership, follow the steps below.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Volunteer for a committee that plans an activity in which you have a particular interest or expertise. Sign up for a role on the committee that will best utilize your talents and knowledge, such as fundraising, recruiting teams or sponsors, organizing or scheduling.
Step2
Know the level of commitment required. Learn how many terms and/or events the position serves. Agree to attend the requisite number of planning meetings, which will probably last about one hour. Confirm that you can provide your own transportation to the meeting location, such as the Cooperative Extension Service office.
Step3
Complete the volunteer application process and submit to any background checks mandatory for 4-H leadership.
Step4
Understand the purpose and goal of the activity. Meet the minimum qualifications for a committee member. Obtain the list of requirements from the headquarters of the 4-H program that sponsors the event.
Step5
Represent the interests and needs of your 4-H region, whether it is the county, city, school district or some other jurisdiction. Observe where any improvements could be made in the event for the next year and share your recommendations with other members of the 4-H leadership team.
