How to Honor Deceased Grandparents

The relationship between a child and his grandparents is precious, partly because not everyone gets the chance to know Grandpa's laugh or taste Grandma's baking. If you were lucky enough to know your grandparents, you will want to remember and honor them after they've died so that your relationship with them lives on.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Write down their colorful stories about their lives. Maybe your grandpa had a moral to every story, so you would learn something from him. Grandma wanted you to know how your life as a child was easier than hers had been. Record these stories they told you so that you can always remember them. You may want to share those stories with your own grandchildren someday.
Step2
Save a memento. Even if your grandma didn't have expensive jewelry to will to you, there's great value in her possessions. Save at least one of her everyday items, a piece of clothing or a kitchen utensil, that reminds you of one of her better qualities every time you look at it.
Step3
Display photos in your home. Grandpa would be proud to know that picture of him in front of his first new truck still hangs in your living room. Displayed photos of your grandparents invite questions and create opportunities for you to talk about these wonderful people.
Step4
Quote them in conversation. Grandpa shared with you the wisdom he gained from a lifetime of experience. Don't be afraid to share it with others. He'd be proud. "As my grandfather used to say," brings out a smile before you even get to the punch line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't overdo it. Give your living relatives equal time.
  • Don't be maudlin. Make happy references to your grandparents that show your appreciation for their lives, as opposed to your sadness about their deaths.
