How to Prevent Hate Crimes

Hate crimes run rampant in a society where tolerance isn't a priority. The current American landscape is ripe for crimes against others over ignorance and differences. However, there are some steps that you can follow to help prevent hate crimes and make your community a safer place to live.

Instructions

    • 1

Read your local newspaper or look online for current instances of hate crimes committed in your general area or state. Contact your local police department for information on hate crime frequency.

    • 2

Research the major causes for hate crimes and the major types of crimes committed against minority groups. Contact advocates of peace and tolerance in your area that can direct you in how to help fight hate crimes.

    • 3

Begin by raising awareness in your local neighborhood and community. Generate literature or pamphlets to people that you make or that you have obtained from an organization that works to prevent hate crimes.

    • 4

Educate the teens and children in your life about the dangers of hate crimes. Try to organize some sort of awareness at local schools and churches to help combat ignorance and lack of tolerance.

    • 5

Stay updated on the latest hate crime information and attacks and remain involved in an organization that promises to combat the problem. Don't give up the fight and maintain awareness and vigilance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit a local college campus as this is often a good way to garner support for the cause. Often, there is already a group in place dedicated to preventing hate crimes.

  • Speak out against things like racial or religious jokes and other instances of intolerance.

  • If you know about someone who has been a perpetrator of a hate crime, it is your responsibility to inform the authorities or else you are an accessory to a crime.
