How to Pick Cycling Eyewear

Sure you want to look good on your bike, but there's a lot more to picking the right cycling eyewear than fashion. When cycling, especially longer distances, you will see better, protect your eyes and feel less fatigue with the proper eyewear. Comfort and protection should be your two biggest concerns when picking cycling eyewear.

Instructions

    • 1

Find eyewear with a wrap-style frame for more protection from wind and flying debris.

    • 2

Try on the eyewear to make sure the fit is good. You want eyewear that stays in place even when you are sweating.

    • 3

Buy eyewear with vents or air holes in the frame or lens to prevent fogging.

    • 4

Check that the lens provides 100-percent ultraviolet (UV) protection from the sun's harmful rays. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause vision loss. For longer exposure, find a lens that protects against UVA, UVB, UVC and blue rays.

    • 5

Minimize glare with the right lens color or polarized lenses. Glare contributes to fatigue and reduces visibility. Brown or amber lenses are the best color for high glare and improved depth perception.

    • 6

Choose several lens colors. Have an alternative pair of glasses or eyewear with removable lenses for low-light conditions. Yellow lenses provide good contrast during low-light conditions and green is a good all-purpose color for varying light conditions.

    • 7

Invest in a pair of goggles when frequently riding in rainy conditions or for high-speed racing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear eyewear to protect you from debris and from UV rays which are present even on cloudy days.
