Switchboard operators these days usually work for big companies to direct incoming, outgoing and interoffice calls. They also work in hospitals doing the same job as well as giving out information to callers as needed and announcing people's arrivals.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • High school diploma or GED
Step1
Earn a high school diploma or pass the GED (Tests of General Educational Development). Also, be able to read, type and spell well to take messages and transfer calls when necessary.
Step2
Use a computer. This does not mean you need to know how to program, but basic computer literacy is a must. You probably should be able to pick up new computer programs easily as well.
Step3
Take required switchboard operator classes. Depending on where you are working, this can take weeks or longer.
Step4
Get on the job training as a switchboard operator. This is specific to the company you are working for. Each company uses a different phone system, and computer setup is integrated with that phone system.
Step5
Listen effectively to incoming callers. Be pleasant and courteous to people.

Tips & Warnings

  • Knowing a foreign language, while not a must, is very helpful now. Spanish is the second most common language in switchboard operation these days, but some companies with worldwide reach deal with multiple languages.
  • The switchboard operator position is becoming obsolete due to downsizing and computer technology.
  • Realize that you are sitting for extended periods of time for this job. A switchboard operator position also can become repetitive after a while.
