How to Organize Computer Cables

Organizing computer cables is a task most would rather not undertake because of the number of cables and wires behind the home or office computer. Moving all of the cables into a cohesive bundle frees up floor space as well as reduces the potential for accidents and frayed wires. Use the following steps to guide the project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cable channeling system
  • Zip ties
  • Labels
  1. Step 1

Pull the entire computer system and desk gently from the wall. This provides room to work properly with the cabling.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a cabling channel kit from any office supply store or home improvement center, such as Lowe's or Home Depot. Ask the salesperson for their help in determining the length of channel required. Buy several packs of plastic zip ties. These will suffice in the absence of a cable channeling system.

  3. Step 3

Collect all of the wires from behind the computer into an identifiable mass. Unplug each cable from the computer one at a time and label the wire according to the device and which port it reconnects to.

  4. Step 4

Install the cable channeling according to the manufacturer's instructions and snake the cable through the system. Plug in each wire, taking care to follow the labeling system to the letter.

  5. Step 5

Gather the cables together if using zip ties and secure four or five cables at a time about at 4-inch intervals. Attach these bundles to the back of the desk or allow them to follow a wall to their respective outlets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the distance short between the device and the computer port. The shorter the cable, the better the connection will be.
  • Turn off all devices and unplug from the wall before handling any cables.
  • Use eye protection when organizing computer cables.
