Symbolic of fire and air, the wand is the quintessential magical tool. It is arguably the most important article in any magical tool collection. Crafting your own is especially satisfying and deepens your connection with this dynamic energy conductor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • A sharp knife
  • An offering
  • Fine sandpaper
  • Mineral oil
  • A soft cloth
  • Decorations
  • Incense

Cut Your Magic Wand

Step1
Know your intent. How you'll use your wand will help determine your choice of wood and decoration.
Step2
Decide what type of wood to use. Apple is a good choice for healing and love magic, birch for moon magic and ivy is effective for faerie magic.
Step3
Find a tree. Tell the tree what you want to do and ask its permission. Sit quietly and wait for an answer. Respect the tree's answer; if it says no, find another tree.
Step4
Cut your magic wand. Custom dictates that you do this on a Wednesday at
sunset, when the moon is waxing. The length of a wand is determined by the
distance between the tip of your middle finger and your elbow. The circumference is what ever feels comfortable in your hand.
Step5
Seal the tree's wound with your saliva. Thank the tree and leave an offering. A dime, a bit of tobacco or a pretty stone are good choices.
Step6
Remove the bark and small twigs. Use a sharp knife; be careful not to mar the wood. Set your magic wand in a safe place to dry. Let cure between 3 and 7 days.

Finishing Touches

Step1
Carve designs into your magic wand. Runes or symbols of your intent are
excellent options.
Step2
Sand smooth using fine sandpaper. Rub with mineral oil, and buff with a soft cloth until your magic wand shines. Decorate with materials you choose, including crystals, small stones or feathers.
Step3
Consecrate your magic wand by passing it through the smoke of incense. Chant words expressive of your personal power and your intent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember your only limitation is your own imagination.
