Making arrows is a fun way to experience the thrill of archery without having to spend a great deal of money on equipment. Spending an afternoon collecting the materials is almost as much fun as shooting the arrows when you've completed the project! Use the tips and techniques below to make your very own arrows.
Things You'll Need
- Dry, dead hardwood sticks
- Sharp knife
- Material for arrowheads (optional)
Determine what sort of bow will be used. Compound bows offer a great deal of power and require a sturdier arrow as compared to a natural bow.
Look around the landscape for dry, dead hardwoods. Dead wood is best, as it can be shaped and whittled to accept fletching and arrowheads more easily.
Cut the arrows to about half the length of the bow itself. This provides ample draw-back length to allow maximum release speed. Heat and straighten the arrow if the piece if slightly bent.
Carve a small notch at the very end of the arrow shaft. Use a sharp knife to make the cut. This will serve as the bowstring catch.
Whittle the front tip of the arrow to a fine point. This will server as the actual arrowhead. More complex arrowheads can be fashioned from bone, flint or even metal.
Construct the flight feathers, called fletching. Collect bird feathers and separate into three or four equally sized portions. Strip the feathers from one side of the feather's rib. Do this for all pieces and affix to the notch end of the arrow for better flight. These can be tied on with sinew or mono-filament.
Tips & Warnings
- Fletching can be left off of the arrows for a more primitive arrow.
- Do not burn the wood or scorch the shaft during straightening. This may lead to a dangerously brittle arrow.
- Use caution when using sharp and dangerous tools.
- Never point the arrow at anyone or towards places occupied with people.
