Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Be aware of your surroundings. Notice if you are in a bank or store that has few customers. Take note of the number of employees working, are they in a public space or an employees-only section of the establishment.
Step2
Pay close attention to any suspicious individuals without drawing attention to yourself. Make a mental note of identifying features such as height, weight, age, ethnicity, hair color, clothing and any adornments such as piercings or tattoos.
Step3
Look closely when you observe an exchange between an employee and customer that seems strange or uncomfortable. Observe the body language of both people. Keep your distance, and look for any signs of a weapon. Try to hear what each person is saying.
Step4
Alert the police or store security when it's safe. Try to accomplish it without being noticed by the perpetrator. Move slowly and cautiously and be sure to inform the authorities that you're witnessing a robbery rather than a theft such as shoplifting. The increased threat of the situation informs their response.
Step5
Cooperate with the robber while maintaining as much distance as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not give the person an opportunity to hurt you and do not argue if you are approached to give up your personal belongings.
  • Do not try and talk the robber out of committing the crime. He she has already begun the process and you increase your chance of being hurt if you challenge his control of the situation.
