How to Visit the High Museum of Art in Atlanta

The High Museum of Art is part of midtown Atlanta's Woodruff Art Center, a complex that also includes the Atlanta Symphony. The museum, founded in 1905, is named for the High family who donated their home to be the museum's first building. Today, the collection is housed in a 135,000 square foot structure, designed by architect Richard Meier. Read on to learn more.

Step1
Purchase tickets to the museum, either at the museum counter or on their website. Choose "Ticketing" from the "Visit" menu listed on the main page if purchasing online. Discounts are offered for those 65 and older, students with ID, children six through seventeen, retired military personnel and military dependents. Active members of the military and children five and younger are admitted free of charge. The High Museum of Art is open Tuesdays through Sundays.
Step2
View the permanent collection. The High Museum's collection includes over 11,000 works. Highlights include their collection of 19th and 20th century European paintings, their African art collection and their collection of work by southern artists.
Step3
See one of the temporary exhibits. The High Museum hosts a regular schedule of important traveling and temporary exhibits. Recent shows have included "Annie Leibovitz: a Photographer's Life" and "Cecilia Beaux: American Figure Painter."
Step4
Attend a Friday night jazz concert. The third Friday of each month, the High Museum hosts a jazz concert, featuring local, national and international artists. Dinner, drinks and dessert are available for purchase. Tickets are available via the museum's website. Click on "Ticketing" under the "Visit" Menu, and then on "Events."
