If you're in the need of tools, but don't want to fork over the cash for a brand-new set, you will be relieved to know that oftentimes you can get the tools to get the job done if you go secondhand.

From Quick Guide: Bargain Hunting 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cruise the second-hand stores. Many have a section for small, hand-held tools like screwdrivers, hammers and wrenches. Chances are, you won't be able to find a matching set, but you'll find something that works.

  2. Step 2

Skim the classifieds. While "used tools" might not be listed, you can still look for moving sales. Call ahead if there's a phone number provided and see what the seller has. She may hold the tools for you if make arrangements to pick them up and provide payment in a reasonable amount of time.

  3. Step 3

For power tools, try refurbished ones. Since it is a niche market, surf the Internet to find places that specialize in this. You can start your search at Reconditioned Toolstore, which offers name-brand tools at steep discounts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't focus on looks, focus on quality. A little bit of rust or a color from the 70s is fine, but make sure that all working parts move (or will once they have had a little bit of care), and that seams, like where the wood handle and the metal of a hammer meet, are still secure.
  • Go for the easy fix. If you find an almost-perfect tool, but it needs one small adjustment, do it. Buying the WD-40 is a lot cheaper than buying new.
