How to Calm a Teen's Fears About College

Going to college marks a turning point in teenagers' lives. They're making their way into the adult world and that can frighten teens. As a parent, you can help calm your teen's fears about college and make the transition as smooth as possible.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Explain to your teen that it's not necessary to have a major when she starts college. Teens are often unsure of what they want to major in, which can cause additional stress. Many colleges have career centers where counselors assist students with career choices.
Step2
Assure your teen that many youngsters going to college are fearful, too. With these common feelings, making friends likely won't be a problem for your teen--even though that's often one of the biggest fears. Tell them not to worry about joining a fraternity or sorority right away as there's always time for that.
Step3
Let your teen know you're there for him. College opens the doors to a whole new world for your teen. Even though it's exciting, it's also terrifying at the same time. Make yourself available to your teen so he knows that Mom and Dad are there to offer advice and give a listening ear.
Step4
Find a counselor for your teen to talk to if she is unable to overcome her fears about college. Talking to a counselor brings a fresh, new perspective, and counselors have ways of making your teen see the positive in the situation.
