Just like the name implies, the shrimp plant has blooms with overlapping bracts resembling a shrimp. A beautiful tropical plant, it blooms profusely in proper conditions--zones nine to 11. It can be planted in the ground or makes a stunning patio display. Read on to learn how to grow a shrimp plant.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Choose a planting area with full morning sun and partial afternoon shade. This plant adds lots of color to a perennial border. Make sure the soil has good drainage.
Step2
Cultivate the area 2 to 3 inches deep and amend the soil with organic matter.
Step3
Space the plants 2 to 3 feet apart. They will spread and grow 2 to 3 feet in height. Water well after planting and keep moist until established.
Step4
Plant in a large container on a porch or patio, if desired. Use an all-purpose potting mix.
Step5
Fertilize once a month with liquid all-purpose fertilizer for flowering plants. This intriguing plant will bloom all year long in tropical climates.
Step6
Propagate by taking cuttings in spring to early summer. Remove a 3- to 4-inch non-flowering shoot just below a node. Dip the tip of the shoot in rooting hormone and place in a pot filled with potting soil. Keep soil moist and out of direct sun. Misting is also beneficial. Do not fertilize until well-rooted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the shrimp plant becomes to leggy, cut back to promote bushiness.
  • Container plants have to be moved indoors for the winter.
