Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Think about where you want to work. You can choose from fast food restaurants, hospitals and schools to name a few. If you do not find a job as a short order cook where you want to work, see if that establishment has another kitchen or dining room job you could take and work up to cook.
Step2
Ask yourself what experience you bring to the table for the employer. If you have worked as a waiter or dining room attendant, this experience will go a long way when you apply for the job of short order cook. You may have to fill out an application to get an interview, and then you can give an overview of your interests and skills.
Step3
Consider the first week or so trial employment. Get your prep work done when things are slow. As the rush begins, you will have vegetables sliced for sandwiches, dessert prepared and all ingredients and utensils you anticipate using within handy reach. This will show that you take things seriously.
Step4
Keep the kitchen organized. This is your domain. When a rush hits, you will draw on your organizational skills to be a good short order cook. Keep the food orders filled as fast as they come in, waiting only the small amount of time it takes to get the order together. At this point the manager knows they made the right decision in hiring you.
Step5
Hone your skills. After a while, you can ask if the manager will let you try a new recipe. The dish should be something that you have cooked elsewhere and know will turn out well. Ideas and recipes that you create will help as you move forward in your career.
