Step 1
Find an area where you have seen coyotes or their tracks or droppings. Wear camouflage, and sit in thick brush where you are completely hidden. If a coyote sees you, chances are he takes off before you can spot him.
-
Step 2
Hold the call in the nook between your thumb and your hand with the part you put your mouth on facing upward. Close all four fingers around the bottom of the call.
-
Step 3
Blow on the call into the wind. Open up your fingers slowly while you are blowing into the call. Stop blowing when your hand is completely open. This simulates the rabbit or deer running out of breath as it dies.
-
Step 4
Repeat. For the cottontail rabbit call, do four to five calls that last two seconds each, making the last call stifled just a bit as the rabbit begins to fade away. For the deer in distress call, make each call last three seconds instead because a deer has more wind than a rabbit.
-
Step 5
Watch for a coyote to appear. Coyotes are very cautious animals and make very little noise as they creep about, so keep your eyes open.
-
Step 6
Wait about five to 10 minutes before attempting the call again, if a coyote hasn't made an appearance by then.
-
Step 7
Search for a new spot, and try again if you haven't spotted a coyote after the third calling sequence.
