Step1
Apply for a job as a helper or apprentice with an experienced plasterer. An experienced plasterer will teach you how to properly use tools, how to mix and apply the plaster. You will also learn how to install lath to adhere the plaster and apply decorative textures. As a helper, you will carry supplies and mix plaster. Getting a job with an experienced plasterer is the best way to learn how to become a plasterer. It will take between 2 to 3 years to learn the plaster trade.
Step2
Check with area Vo-Tech Schools to see if any plastering courses are available. Vocational Technical schools offer technical education and training in skilled labor. Night classes are available for adults who have a job or day classes for full time students.
Step3
Visit the International Masonry Institute website to find out more about the availability of apprenticeship programs and necessary qualifications. The IMI website has links to local organizations that can help you learn to become a plasterer and find a job.
Step4
Contact the Operating Plasterers' and Cement Masons International Association for help with educational and apprenticeship programs available to you; visit their website for union locations close to you. The union places an emphasis on learning to become a skilled tradesman and will help you get started in becoming a skilled plasterer.
