Any position in logging requires great skill and even greater grit. Accidents do happen in the forest and people do die, but for those that are skilled in what they do and not afraid of the risks, there is money to be made. Use these steps to learn a little more about the logging industry and how to become a logger.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Live in a timber industry state. This may sound obvious, but the better the timber industry, the better the chance you have at getting on with a trusted company. The Pacific Northwest is home to such timber giants as Weyerhaeuser and Georgia Pacific.
Step2
Learn about the forestry industry and what logging requires. If a local community college near you offers any classes that provide a little training, take it.
Step3
Work with a tree trimming or clearing company for awhile to gain experience. Tree trimming companies are often smaller and willing to train. You will gain experience using a chainsaw, climbing trees and felling them in difficult areas. If the company does commercial clearing, you will gain that experience also.
Step4
Apply for a job. After you have built up some experience and skill, apply for a logging position. Do whatever skills testing they ask and offer to work in any position. The only way to get in the door without lots of experience is to be flexible in every area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check out a company before applying to work for them. Some companies have very few accidents, while others have a lot of them and a few fatalities. You have a right to know whether or not the company and people you will work with apply safe work practices.
  • Logging is extremely dangerous. If you have a family, talk with your spouse about this before jumping in as this is a profession with risk involved.
