How to Build a Boat First Aid Kit
Every boat should carry a first aid kit to cope with any medical emergencies that may arise. Here are some items to include in a basic first aid kit.

1
Identify the container you will use for your first aid kit. Whether you decide on a bag, box or other container, be sure that it is waterproof or at least water resistant.
-
2
Assemble various personal care items including bandages and gauze for cuts and abrasions, hot and cool packs to reduce swelling and standard over-the-counter medications, such as pain relievers, antihistamines, cough suppressants and congestion.

3
Consider including additional medical supplies such as rubber gloves, trauma shears and a pocket mask.
-
4
Identify enough emergency blankets for the maximum allowance your boat can hold. Emergency blankets are used to keep in warmth.
-
5
Assemble the necessary tools you may need in an emergency on the boat. You should include a knife sharp enough to cut through rope. Coating the knife with petroleum jelly will protect the blade from salt water. Heavy duty wire cutters should be included if you use wire loop tie-downs. Both a Phillip's head and straight edge screw driver should be added to your kit. Add scissors in case you need to fashion a patch or cut something without the use of your knife.
-
6
Include items for personal care, such as bandaging materials, medications and splints.

Add a sailmaker's palm to your first aid kit. If you have to fix your sail or any canvas, sewing through several layers of canvas requires effort. The sailmaker's palm will protect your hand from coming into contact with the needle. Make sure you have several needles and extra canvas with you as well.
