Step 1
Identify the container you will use for your toolbox. Whether you decide on a bag, box or other container, be sure that it is waterproof or at least water resistant. The container should also be airtight.
-
Step 2
Assemble various tools you may need to safely fix a problem on your boat. These may include: allen wrenches, bailing wire, circuit tester, crimpers, duct tape, electrical wire, electrical tape, flashlight, gasket sealer, lighter, lock blade knife, pliers, prop puller, screw drivers, silicone sealer, small file, socket set, spark plug socket, splice connectors, super glue, vise grips, WD-40, wire connectors, wire cutters and zip ties. Adding a flashlight is a good idea as well. You never know when you may need to make a repair after sundown or look for a leak in a dark corner of the boat.
-
Step 3
Add several spare parts to your toolkit. Suggested parts include fuses, hose clamps, impeller, a prop, a serpentine belt, stainless screws and a thermostat.
-
Step 4
When duct tape may not be enough to fix a rip, tear or hole, you may need a hull repair kit. Add some additional epoxy, applicators, sandpaper and fiberglass cloth to your toolbox in case the ones in the hull repair kit go bad.
-
Step 5
Keep the box on board at all times.
