Having a boat anchor that works right for your boat and location is essential to boat safety. If you're experiencing problems with your boat's anchor, you must find a solution to this small problem before it causes you a bigger one. Here's how.

From Quick Guide: Boating
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify what is wrong with the anchor. The solutions to many of the problems will have different answers. Of course, there's also the problem of simply having the wrong boat anchor for the job. If that's the case, then you need to replace it with a new one that worked better for your situation.

  2. Step 2

Check the anchor tackle. If the problem is that you keep straying from your anchored location, the problem may not be with the anchor at all. Before you get wet, check the anchor tackle to make sure that the line isn't slipping.

  3. Step 3

Give the anchor just enough line. If you give the anchor too much slack, then you'll wander from your location. If you haven't given it enough line to reach the bottom, then it probably isn't anchoring you at all. Instead, you're just pulling around extra weight which might slow you down but won't keep you in place.

  4. Step 4

Make sure that your anchor is heavy enough for your boat. If the anchor doesn't weigh enough, then it won't keep your boat secured to the same area. To fix this, either buy a heavier anchor or buy another anchor to use in conjunction with the one that is too light.

  5. Step 5

Check that you are using the right kind of anchor. Some anchors are great for bodies of water with sand floors. Others are better for rocky surfaces. Make sure that your anchor is suitable for the area that you are boating in.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can always check with a marina to see which anchor types are best for the area.
  • Having an anchor that doesn't work with your boat could harm your boat and the people on it.
