Step1
Measure your boat. Some tackle work well with small boats. Larger boats might require sturdier tackle.
Step2
Determine the calmness of the water where you are boating. If the water is calm, you probably don't need heavy tackle. Heavier tackle may be necessary if you find yourself in rough waters.
Step3
Buy a chain to connect the anchor's line and the shank. The chain helps the anchor dig into the floor and keeps the angle of the pull on the shank low.
Step4
Use galvanized shackles to hook the chain to the anchor on one end and the chain to the anchor line on the other end. The shackle will be secured with the toggle belt. When you're about to tighten the toggle belt, put some waterproof grease on it. Otherwise, you might not be able to remove it later.
Step5
Buy tackle that is sturdy and well made. If your tackle isn't any good, it doesn't matter what kind of anchor you have. You could lose the anchor completely and be set adrift.
Step6
Buy a vinyl-coated anchor chain to ensure that you don't have problems with the chain rusting.
