A Big Brother or Big Sister is a mentor to an at-risk youth. The Big Brother/Sister program provides excellent opportunities for adult mentors to make a difference in the life of a child, adolescent or teen. Big Brothers/Sisters spend approximately 1 hour per week hanging out or doing a specific activity.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Go online to the Big Brother/Big Sister website to fill out the online application to be a Big Brother. See Resources.
Step2
Gather two personal references, such as a close friend, former teacher, or coworker/manager. Consider your schedule and leisure time allows for quality interaction with a teenager.
Step3
Provide information for a background check. Big Brother/Big Sister performs a background check on all adult applicants.
Step4
Participate in an in-person interview at your local chapter. For local chapter information, visit the Big Brother/Big Sister homepage. Let them know in your interview that you prefer to mentor a teenager.
Step5
Spend approximately 1 hour per week with your teenager. Choose a regular time so that your teenager looks forward to the time spent together. Clear the schedule with the parent or guardian.
Step6
Assist with homework, play video games, or basketball, go for a walk, make hot chocolate, and just spend time together. Get parental approval before starting any activity or outing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Proof of automobile insurance may be required.
  • Aim for free or low-cost activities with your little sister/brother to avoid overspending.
