How to Build a Basic Arbor

If you want to add flair or elegance to your backyard or garden, build a basic arbor. Building an arbor requires a little time and patience, but it is a relatively simple project for a beginning wood-worker. Things You'll Need:

• Four 4x4 posts
• Enough wood to make the rafters and cross pieces
• Drill
• Screws
• Saw
• Cement
• Level

1. Dig two holes as wide as you plan to build the arbor. Pour crushed gravel into each hole. Place a 4 x 4 post into each hole and then fill the hole with cement.

2. Lay a board across the posts. Use a level to ensure the posts are level and of equal height.

3. Let the cement dry for a day or two. In the meantime, pre cut the arbor cross pieces and rafters. Be as artistic as you want - let your creativity take over. Take into account the desired width and height of the arbor.

4. Do a dry run installation of the arbor cross pieces and rafters. Don't screw everything down until you feel that the arbor looks the way you want.

5. Fasten the cross pieces between the posts. Verify that they are leveled off and then screw them in tightly. Ensure the height is level and even.

6. Notch the wood on the cross pieces. Add the rafters and secure them down tightly.
