How to Collect Movie Props

Collecting movie props is a wonderful way to build a collection of Hollywood memorabilia. Many auction houses and online movie websites offer items from movies and theater productions as well. Getting just the right movie prop from a particular film is always a great reward for an avid fan or collector.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Determine what items will be collected. Larger movie props can be harder to ship, and the cost alone can be prohibitive. Consider smaller props that can be mailed at a reasonable rate and that may survive shipping better.
Step2
Decide which era of film you want. Movie props from the golden age of Hollywood or earlier can be found mostly from private collections and estates. Late 20th century movie props are commonly bought and sold at online auction houses and even at places like garage sales and flea markets.
Step3
Collect a particular genre of movie props. Science fiction props and even television props command a high premium if the item is rare or highly sought after. Bidding wars have been known to occur on props that have a devout fan base.
Step4
Inspect and authenticate all props being considered for purchase. Many fakes exist and telling them from the legitimate item is sometimes difficult. Always purchase movie props from a reputable dealer to ensure a satisfactory transaction.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go to movie conventions and fan gatherings. These can yield great movie props or even a great lead to other movie prop outlets.
  • Call a movie studio and ask what their process is for releasing props to the public. Some have private sales or have agreements with brick and mortar auction houses.
