Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Decide what type of material you want your railings to be made from. If a deck is made of wood or vinyl, most homeowners choose to install a railing made of the same material to create fluidity within the entire structure. However, if you do choose a different material, make sure it will install well with the current deck.
Step2
Figure out how you want to connect the balusters or main railing posts to your deck. Some professionals choose to simply secure them to the deck with a certain number of posts in between. Others choose to connect the balusters to one another and secure the posts in between. For many, it's an aesthetic decision, but still one that needs to be made.
Step3
Find out what types of ornate designs you can to add to your railing. Some folks look for a simple design without any toppers, baskets or lights added to the railing. Others choose a more complicated design, adding color or a different type of material to their plan to make it their own.
Step4
Think about safety when you choose your new deck railing. If there are children or senior citizens that will be using the area, take them into consideration when planning things out.
Step5
Plan. Deck railing posts need a strong and sturdy base, and most of them have posts planted in concrete. If you have a piece of dried concrete in your way, make sure you have alternative so you can put a sturdy railing together without tearing up your deck or patio.
