How to Become an Animal Control Worker

Animal control workers are responsible for helping lost, abused, neglected and abandoned animals. They investigate reports of mistreatment and reports of dangerous animals. Although the procedure for becoming an animal control officer will vary by location, there are some things you should do if you want to enter this field.

Step1
Volunteer at a shelter or local animal control facility while you are young (high school and college).
Step2
Earn your high school diploma, and apply to college.
Step3
Major in criminal justice in college. Make sure to take some classes in animal sciences as well.
Step4
Become certified as a peace officer in your state.
Step5
Work as a police officer, park ranger, zookeeper or kennel manager while you get on-the-job training.
Step6
Shadow several different animal control workers to gain the required number of hours of training that your state or county requires.
Step7
Study the laws and regulations regarding animals in your area. Complete any state training.
Step8
Interview for a job as an animal control worker, making sure to mention your volunteer experience, education, and prior work experience. Your preparation in learning the animal laws will help you answer questions.
