How to Install Interior Storm Window Sashes

Seasonal installation of interior storm windows provides added comfort and reduces energy costs. Household items are also protected from harmful rays when using interior storm windows. Due to the high costs of windows, homeowners can often repair or replace many components within the window itself to lower expenses. When installing window sashes, follow the steps listed here.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Remove interior storm window from window frame. Pry away the existing sash stops using the pry bar.

  2. Step 2

    Extract the window tracks with sash. Pull out all the existing staples or nails. Wipe clean the exposed area. Repair any visible damage.

  3. Step 3

    Insert the replacement balances on the side jams to ensure proper fit, and then remove them to attach the balance blocks on the underside of the balance. Attach the end pieces.

  4. Step 4

    Attach the clips. The first one should be at least 3 inches from the window sill at both the top and bottom sills. Evenly space the others should in between. Install both balances to the clips now. They should bump easily into place. Beginning with the top sash, place your new window sash in your new tracks.

  5. Step 5

    Add the parting bead along top edge and replace the sash stops. Fill any holes with the wood filler. Apply the wood finish to the new window sash. Replace the interior storm window back into its original position. Touch up any areas that may have chipped.
