Symantec is a corporation that sells software, primarily for security. It's mostly known for the Norton family of antivirus and utility software, suitable for the home PC. The Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (SAVCE) software is suitable for the workstations and network servers of companies and university labs and other local area networks (LANs). Here's how you can install SAVCE to guard against viruses, Trojan horses, worms, adware and spyware.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition software

Step1
Make sure you meet the system requirements. These are:

OS: Windows XP or 2000

Hard disk: 55 MB +

RAM: 128 MB +

Web browser: Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or later
Step2
De-install any other antivirus software from the computer. Start by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click "Add or Remove Programs." As soon as it populates, select the software you want to remove and press "Change/Remove."
Step3
Start the installation. If you purchased SAVCE online, use Windows Explorer to locate the self-extracting installer file in your hard drive and double-click it. If your SAVCE was supplied on a CD, place the CD in the CD-ROM drive and wait for it to auto-start. If the CD doesn't auto-start, use Windows Explorer to view the CD contents and double-click on the Symantec AntiVirus.msi file.
Step4
Allow the installation to proceed automatically. When you reach the Live Update window, click Next. Let the live update process complete and don't restart your PC until it has. Ignore boxes that say "You must restart your system" before the completion of the live update. Click "Finish" at the end of the live update process.
Step5
Restart your PC. If an "Old Virus Definition File" window appears, check the "Don't remind me again" box. Press "Close."
Step6
Launch SAVCE. You can do this in two ways. One is to click the new "golden shield" icon on your task bar or desktop. The other is by clicking Start > Programs > Symantec Client Security > Symantec AntiVirus.
Step7
Set Live Update to run once a day. The default is once a week. Live Update checks for new file definitions and software updates. For instructions to make this change, visit Symantec.com, click "Symantec Client Security" and "Changing the LiveUpdate Schedule."
Step8
Activate Live Update. This is done by clicking the Live Update button in the Symantec AntiVirus screen at the lower right.

Tips & Warnings

  • With SAVCE, administrators can control installation, configuration and management.
  • SAVCE supports Linux workstations.
