How to Report a Downed Power Line

A downed electrical line creates a highly dangerous public hazard. Live lines on the ground or hanging in the roadway can cause car accidents or start fires. When people or animals cross their path, electrocution is a deadly possibility. If you encounter a downed electrical line, report it to the authorities immediately.

1. Keep away from the power line. If no emergency personnel are on site, chances are it's live. If you're in a car, don't get out. Back up to a safe distance, and then turn on your emergency flashers and headlights to signal other motorists of a problem ahead.
2. Notify the police immediately. Use a cell phone if you can. You must get emergency personnel to the site as quickly as possible to block off the area and avoid accidents. If you don't know the emergency services number for the area, try 911 or contact a phone operator.
3. Report the downed power line by providing as much detail about the location as you can. If you're unsure exactly where you are, describe nearby crossroads or landmarks, such as buildings or billboards. Tell the authorities the position of the downed electrical line, such as "on the ground across the road," or "hanging low and ice covered beside the ditch."
4. Call the utility company and provide details. Emergency Services also notifies utility companies when power lines are down; as an eyewitness, you can provide answers to any immediate questions. The sooner the utility company has all the necessary information, the sooner they can appropriately respond to the problem.

Tips & Warnings

• Never touch anything or anyone near a power line that's down. Electricity can jump a short distance; branches, cars, animals and human beings can all conduct current under the right conditions.
